The Kings of Cusseta website has been set up to share family information with anyone descending from the King family of Cusseta, Georgia. Please join us as we discover more about the heritage, history, and genealogy of this large and venerable family.
There are three main King family lines which will be followed on this website:
- Henry King and his wife Elizabeth Lee, two of the founding settlers of Chattahoochee County. The great majority of the Cusseta Kings descend from this couple.
- Charles King (Henry’s brother) and his wife Pheribe Moore. They also lived in Chattahoochee County.
- Rufus King (cousin to Henry and Charles) and two of his wives, sisters Sarah Way and Catherine Way. This family settled in Webster County, but several family members later moved to Chattahoochee County.
Rufus King was cousin to Henry and Charles by way of his father, Charles King (married to Unity Toole) who was brother to Joseph King (married to Zilpha Powell) who was father of Henry and Charles. Another brother of Charles and Joseph was William King, father of William Rufus DeVane King who was elected Vice President of the United States in 1853. You will find many repeated names in this family.
To make it even more confusing, a daughter of Rufus King, Catherine Alice King, married a son of Henry King, Garry Wood King*. Catherine Alice and Garry Wood King were second cousins but had not been raised together. Their descendants can thus claim two of the Kings of Cusseta family lines!
